![]() ![]() ![]() Phoenix, in his first feature since his flamboyant, Oscar-winning turn in Joker, registers well here as a soft-spoken and sympathetic, if emotionally stunted, character. Her scenes with the shaggy, laconic Phoenix, in which they sort out their emotional baggage, quicken the pulse of a movie that generally moves at a measured pace. Gaby Hoffmann, whose career began in childhood with Field of Dreams and Sleepless in Seattle, gives an impressive performance as Viv, a woman passionately–even desperately–trying to stitch together her relationships with her husband, brother and son. Mills interposes the children’s interviews and the uncle-nephew scenes with the brother-sister conversations. No wonder Johnny tells the boy, “Maybe we can just take this process slowly and see how it feels.” He provokes him by wandering away on busy streets while Johnny talks on the phone. He challenges his uncle to demonstrate affection, if not love. He loudly repeats Johnny’s words, and he questions the latest news about his father, whom he fears losing. Spending so much time with his nephew begins to transform him, if only in fits and starts. Johnny, for all of his keen professional interest in the lives of kids in Los Angeles, Detroit, New York and New Orleans, clearly has trouble expressing his own emotions and frustrations. As further background, their mother suffered from dementia before her passing. Meanwhile, he volunteers to look after Jesse, a hyperactive nine-year-old whose mother, Johnny’s sister Viv, finds herself trying to cope with her husband’s latest mental health crisis. Joaquin Phoenix portrays Johnny, a single and childless public radio journalist who travels around the country with his producing partner interviewing children (not child actors) about their outlook on life. His latest project, C’mon C’mon, is the most existential and least coherent in his trilogy (to date), despite its many strengths. Of course, the characters of Oliver and Jamie in those films serve as Mills’ alter egos. In 20th Century Women (2016), for which Mills himself earned an Oscar nomination for Original Screenplay, he focuses on his mother, portrayed by Annette Bening, and her unconventional lifestyle as a single mom in late 1970s California. In Beginners (2010), for which the late Christopher Plummer won an Academy Award, Mills dramatizes his elderly father’s gay relationship with a much younger man. He spends as much time as possible in the Rocky Mountains. The writer, director and graphic artist Mike Mills loves to explore family. When not immersed in the daily activities of academy life, Reeder enjoys golfing, camping, reading, running, and team sports. The Reeders have a daughter, Jessica, who has followed in her parents’ footsteps and has been teaching in Adventist education for the last six years – five years at Mile High Academy and this last year at Fort Collins Christian School. After 31 years in the dorm, in July of 2015, Reeder became principal of Campion Academy. After two years as assistant, he became the head dean for the next 29 years. A few months later, Reeder was working at Campion as a part-time teacher and as the assistant boys’ dean. He was introduced to the boys’ dean, Don Kanen, and that introduction planted a seed in Reeder’s heart for the boys’ dorm. Knowing Reeder’s love for youth, Martinsen asked him to help out with vespers. Providentially, Pastor Martinsen had also moved and become the chaplain at Campion Academy. Throughout the play’s tours, Reeder and Donna got to know each other better and were married in August of 1982.Īfter graduation, they moved to Colorado where Reeder worked in communications in Fort Collins. Donna Reedy (now Reeder) also attended WWU at the time and became one of the cast members of the play. ![]() While working there, Reeder helped to author the “Jesus” play and traveled extensively with Martinsen and others, performing the play throughout Utah and Colorado, as well as the Pacific Northwest while Reeder attended Walla Walla University. Pastor Martinsen was one of Reeder’s teachers while he was in academy in Salt Lake City, Utah, where Reeder also began his career in youth ministry after graduation.
